Amit Shah Slams Mamata Banerjee: Mamata Opposes Operation Sindoor and Waqf Amendment to Appease Muslim Vote Bank

Kolkata: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of opposing the Operations Sindoor and the Waqf Amendment Bill to appease her Muslim vote bank. Speaking in Kolkata, Shah said that by doing so, Mamata is insulting the mothers and sisters of the country. He predicted that in the 2026 assembly elections, women in the state would teach Mamata and the TMC a lesson for criticizing the Operation Sindoor.

On the first day of his two-day visit to West Bengal, Shah addressed a gathering of party workers during the Vijay Sankalp programme. He reminded them that when tourists from Bengal were killed in the Pahalgam terrorist attack, Mamata Banerjee had remained silent. He also alleged that the Murshidabad riots were state-sponsored and that despite the Home Ministry recommending the deployment of the BSF to control the violence, the Mamata government did not cooperate, allowing the unrest to continue.

Three Killed in Communal Violence

Shah claimed that several senior TMC leaders were involved in the Murshidabad riots linked to the Waqf Amendment Bill protests. The riots left three people dead and many others injured. He alleged that Mamata Banerjee’s stand against the law was purely for appeasement politics.

He further charged that Mamata Banerjee has opened the borders of Bengal to Bangladeshi immigrants and has refused to provide the required land to the BSF for security measures. “If the TMC gives the BSF the necessary land, infiltration can be stopped, but they won’t allow it,” he said.

A recent report by a committee appointed by the High Court to investigate the Murshidabad violence highlighted the involvement of local TMC leaders, including councillor Mahbub Alam. The report stated that the violence primarily targeted the Hindu community.

Inauguration of the Central Forensic Science Laboratory

Before addressing party workers, Shah inaugurated the new building of the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) at Rajarhat in Kolkata. Speaking at the event, he said that the Indian government is committed to creating a secure, transparent, and evidence-based criminal justice system. “It is crucial that our law enforcement agencies stay two steps ahead of criminals,” he said.

He also shared that India’s criminal justice system is entering a new era. In July 2024, the government had implemented three new criminal laws: the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA). Prior to this, the country’s first National Forensic Science University (NFSU) was set up in 2020.

Shah highlighted that eight such forensic institutions have already been established across the country, with plans for eight more. The central government has also supported states in setting up forensic vans in every district. Several states have expanded their own forensic labs to strengthen their investigation capabilities.
