Jaishankar Meets Chinese Foreign Minister, Highlights India’s Tough Stand on Terrorism and Need to Ease LAC Tensions
After the clash in Galwan Valley, India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar traveled to China, where he met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. During their discussions, Jaishankar firmly conveyed India’s uncompromising stance on terrorism. He also emphasized that stable relations between India and China are beneficial not just for both countries, but for the entire world. Speaking on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, Jaishankar underlined the importance of ensuring that differences do not turn into disputes. He further stressed the need to reduce tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
India Warns China: India’s Clear Message on Terrorism
This was the first high-level meeting between Jaishankar and Wang Yi since the violent Galwan Valley episode. Jaishankar made it clear that India has zero tolerance for terrorism and expects the same commitment from China. His remarks come at a time when China had extended extensive support to Pakistan during India’s Operation Sindoor, which followed the Pahalgam attack. During that period, China not only provided Pakistan with fighter jets but also backed its proxy operations.
India-China Ties Matter for the World
Despite these concerns, Jaishankar highlighted that steady and healthy relations between India and China are in the interest of the global community. He pointed out that differences between the two nations should not escalate into conflicts, nor should competition be allowed to become confrontation. “A stable relationship between India and China benefits not only our countries but the entire world,” he remarked.
China Should Work to Ease LAC Tensions
Jaishankar noted that over the past nine months, there had been good progress in bringing bilateral ties back to normal. However, he urged China to continue efforts to lower tensions at the LAC. He also raised the issue of China restricting exports of critical minerals, stating that such obstacles should be avoided if the two countries wish to rebuild trust and strengthen ties.
Jaishankar stressed the need for long-term thinking to improve bilateral relations. He referred to the gradual improvement in ties since the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan in October 2024. “It is our joint responsibility to maintain this positive momentum,” he said.
On Kailash Mansarovar and Future Dialogue
Earlier, Jaishankar also met Chinese Vice President Han Zheng. In this discussion, he reiterated that normal relations between India and China would be mutually beneficial. Arriving in Beijing from Singapore, Jaishankar spoke with Zheng about marking the 75th anniversary of India-China diplomatic ties. He also highlighted how the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage is being widely appreciated in India.
He said, “A continued normalization of our ties will serve the interests of both countries. Given the complex international environment we are meeting in today, an open exchange of views and perspectives between two neighboring nations and major economies like India and China is extremely important. I look forward to such discussions during this visit.”
