Men’s Hockey: India’s poor run in men’s hockey continued as the team suffered a 3-4 defeat against Argentina in the European tour of the FIH Pro League. The loss was largely due to defensive errors that cost India crucial goals and ultimately the match.

Men’s Hockey: India’s Struggles Continue in European Hockey Tour with Third Straight Defeat
India’s men’s hockey team is going through a tough phase during their ongoing European tour in the FIH Pro League. On June 11, the team suffered its third straight defeat, this time against Argentina with a final scoreline of 3-4. Despite showing flashes of brilliance, India once again fell short due to defensive errors and missed opportunities. This loss comes after back-to-back defeats to the Netherlands, signaling worrying signs ahead of the next fixtures.
Argentina started strong and maintained pressure throughout the match, capitalizing on India’s weaknesses at the back. While India did fight back on several occasions to equalize, the South American side ultimately had the upper hand.
Argentina Dominates the Second Quarter
Argentina came into the game with a clear strategy—to apply early pressure and disrupt India’s rhythm. That plan worked to perfection when they earned a quick breakthrough in just the third minute of play. Their captain, Matias Rey, found the net with a sharp finish, exploiting a critical mistake by Indian defender Amit Rohidas. His slip in the defense allowed Argentina an easy opportunity to score, setting the tone for a tense match.
India responded well to going behind. Captain Harmanpreet Singh brought his team back into the game in the 12th minute by converting a penalty corner with power and precision, restoring parity at 1-1. However, instead of shifting momentum in India’s favor, the goal only spurred Argentina to push harder.
In the second quarter, Argentina stepped up their dominance. They maintained ball possession for long spells and created several goal-scoring opportunities. Just a few minutes into the second period, Lucas Martinez scored another goal for Argentina. Once again, a lapse in India’s defensive coordination allowed the Argentine forward to strike from close range, regaining their lead at 2-1.

India Fights Back But Falls Short
India, known for its strong comeback spirit, did not let the pressure derail their hopes. After halftime, the Indian squad came back with more intensity and a clear focus on attack. Their persistence was rewarded in the 33rd minute when Harmanpreet Singh successfully converted a penalty stroke, leveling the match again at 2-2. This goal not only showcased Harmanpreet’s individual brilliance but also reflected India’s resilience under pressure.
But the celebration was short-lived. Just a minute later, Argentina’s Santiago Tarazona made the most of a counter-attack and scored a fine goal to tilt the balance back in Argentina’s favor. It was another moment where India’s backline was caught off-guard. Quick transitions by the Argentine side continued to expose gaps in India’s defense, which had been a concern throughout the tour.
India didn’t give up. In the third quarter, they played their best phase of the match. Displaying swift passing and aggressive gameplay, the team built momentum. Their efforts paid off in the 42nd minute when forward Abhishek scored off a rebound, leveling the score 3-3. That goal reignited hopes of a turnaround.
However, in the final quarter, Argentina sealed the contest. Just minutes into the fourth period, Lucio Mendez slotted in the decisive goal, taking advantage of another loose defensive moment from India. Despite having a few more chances, including a crucial penalty corner in the 55th minute, India couldn’t find the net again.
Third Consecutive Loss Raises Concerns
With this result, India has now lost three consecutive matches in the European leg of the FIH Pro League. Earlier, they suffered two back-to-back defeats at the hands of the Netherlands with scores of 1-2 and 2-3. Each loss has highlighted a recurring pattern—strong midfield and attacking play undermined by frequent defensive lapses and a failure to convert crucial chances.
These results are particularly worrying considering the expectations from the Indian side going into the tournament. The team’s inability to hold leads or respond quickly after conceding is becoming a major concern for the coaching staff. Also, penalty corners—once considered India’s strong point—have not been as effective during this tour.
As India prepares to face Argentina once again on June 12, the team needs to regroup, analyze their weaknesses, and bring more discipline to their defense. With better coordination and improved finishing, they can hope to turn things around and restore some pride in the upcoming matches.
